Basin Complex Fire Fully Contained
Less Than 600 Firefighters Remain To Fight Fire

BIG SUR, Calif. -- The Basin Complex Fire was declared fully contained Sunday evening after burning more than 162,000 acres over more than a month.

U.S. Forest Service officials said the fire was 100 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Sunday.The blaze started on June 21 by a lightning strike and has caused hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes and burned dozens of buildings to the ground.With the fire contained, fire crews are expected to mop up spot fires within the fire area.
There are now just 562 firefighters assigned to the Basin Complex Fire.The total cost for fighting the fire has topped $77 million.All of the national forest lands in the Monterey Ranger District remained closed Monday morning, but all evacuations have been lifted within the county.
