BIG SUR, Calif. -- Flames from the Basin Complex Fire burned through portions of a popular Boy Scout camp, but a cleanup effort is under way to get the Scouts back inside the camp.

Camp Pico Blanco is the oldest Boy Scout camp on the Central Coast and is somewhat of an institution for residents all along the coastline.

Most of the facilities are still standing, but the fire did destroy the camp ranger's home, two outhouses, the main water lines and the rifle range. Several trails were also damaged as trees and debris fell across the paths.

Albert Gallegos, with Boy Scouts of America, said the cost to repair and restore the camp is expected to be more than $500,000.

The camp is closed, but camp officials are working with fire personnel to determine when scouts and campers can return to the area.

"Our Scouts are dying to get back in," Gallegos said. "Our Scouts love this camp and want to come back now."

Gallegos said that they may be able to let some Scouts help with restoring some of the trails as part of the Boy Scouts' forest merit badges.
