POSTED: 11:13 pm PDT August 18, 2008

American Muna Lee had the top time in the morning run of the women's 200m, while fellow U.S. sprinters Allyson Felix and Marshevet Hooker also won their first-round heats Tuesday morning at the Bird's Nest.

Lee, who finished fifth in the 100m on Sunday, had a time of 22.71 seconds to win the second heat. Felix, racing from lane seven in the first heat, had a time of 23.02 seconds, while Hooker came in at 23.07 in the third heat.

"I set it up at the beginning," said Lee. "I worked the curve and now I'll just get ready for the next race. I've been working hard to get comfortable with the curve."

Veronica Campbell-Brown, the reigning Olympic champion, qualified for tonight's second round as did fellow Jamaicans Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart.

On Sunday, Jamaica, led by the gold medal effort of Shelly-Ann Fraser, completed a medal sweep in the 100 with Simpson and Stewart tying for the silver medal. In that race, three American sprinters who were in the final were left off the medal podium.

American Brittney Reese had the top mark in the women's long jump qualifying rounds with a leap of 6.87 meters. Brazil's Maureen Higa Maggi was second at 6.79, while reigning Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia also qualified with a mark of 6.70.

"It feels good, right now I'm just trying to adjust to it," said Reese of her top mark. Grace Upshaw and Funmilayo Jimoh of the U.S. also qualified for the final, which will be Friday.

Czech Barbora Spotakova, the reigning world champion, had the best mark in the women's javelin qualifying round at 67.69 meters, just ahead of Germans Christina Obergfoll (67.52) and Steffi Nerius (63.94). Kara Patterson did not qualify, leaving the U.S. without a competitor for Thursday's final.

A Lot Of Gold At Stake

There are five medal events in Tuesday's session. The United States has high hopes in both the women's 400 meters and 100 meter hurdles. Lolo Jones of the U.S. is the favorite in the 100 hurdles was very impressive by taking her semifinal heat in a blazing 12.43 seconds. Jones logged the fastest time in the world since fellow American Joanna Hayes set an Olympic record of 12.37 seconds to win gold at the 2004 Athens Games. American sprinter Sanya Richards also ran the fastest time in the semifinals of the women's 400 meters, taking her heat in 49.90 seconds. Great Britain's Christine Ohuruogu was next with a time of 50.14 seconds.

Also Tuesday, the men will battle for gold in the 1,500 meters, high jump and the discus. Virgilius Alekna of Lithuania will shoot for his third straight gold medal in the discus, while Sweden's Stefan Holm will try to repeat as Olympic champion in the high jump. Mehdi Baala of France has the top personal-best time of the 1,500 field, which doesn't feature U.S. distance runner Bernard Lagat, who was hoping to medal in Beijing, but failed to qualify for the final.
