Gonzaga Survives Santa Clara To Make WCC Final

POSTED: 11:32 pm PDT March 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Josh Heytvelt scored 15 points as 22nd-ranked Gonzaga held off Santa Clara, 52-48, in a West Coast Conference semifinal.

Matt Bouldin had eight points for the Bulldogs (25-6), who advance to Monday's WCC final against San Diego, which surprised St. Mary's with a 75-69 double overtime win later Sunday. Austin Daye contributed eight points and eight rebounds in the win.

Brody Angley picked up 13 points and dished out four assists for the Broncos (15-16), who ended the year losing three of their last four games. John Bryant added 12 points and six rebounds while Calvin Johnson scored nine points in defeat.

Santa Clara began the game with an 11-3 burst ending on a three by Johnson, and Gonzaga responded to get within 19-18 on a Heytvelt trey with 7:24 to play in the half.

Heytvelt hit another three to forge a 24-24 tie with 4:55 remaining, and the Bulldogs went up by four on Abdullahi Kuso's jumper with three minutes left.

However, Mitch Henke sank one-of-two from the line and Santa Clara went into the break down three.

A Henke three-pointer 5 1/2 minutes into the second half pulled the Broncos even at 32-32, then Angley's jumper with 12:43 to go pushed them into a 37-34 advantage.

The momentum swung again and a Micah Downs three just after the midway point pushed Gonzaga ahead 39-37. Henke struck again from beyond the arc to bring the Broncos within 43-42 with 7:40 remaining, but the Bulldogs responded with a small burst for a 49-44 edge with 5:27 to go on a Bouldin layup.

Santa Clara came within 49-48 on an Angley lay-in, but Jeremy Pargo and Kuso finally iced the game when the former nailed two free throws with 35 seconds left and the latter made one-of-two from the line with 10 seconds to play.
